My Story

I was born in New York to my parents, who are both Pakistani immigrants. My parents worked hard to forge their way in this foreign land and their hard work and perseverance pushes me to put my best foot forward.

As a Pakistani, once you reach your pre-teen years, it’s time to start thinking about your future. According to stereotypes, which aren’t really stereotypes, you have a list of three career choices to choose from: doctor, lawyer, or engineer. Anything outside of the box is considered a waste of time.

Luckily for me, my parents encouraged me from day one to pursue my dreams. As a child, I wanted nothing more than to be an artist. Smearing colors on a canvas all day was my ambition until I realized I’m merely average and that a child wielding a broken crayon has more talent than me.

Still wanting to pursue something creative, I enrolled in college and studied Fashion Design. Upon graduation, I realized my degree was useless. I then combined my mediocre art skills with my minimal substituting experience and taught art for three years, from Pre-K to 8th grade.

As my final year ended, I realized that a career revolving around art was not meant for me. I decided to start writing. What jump started me was my professor’s last comment to me as she critiqued my final project. “Why didn’t you pursue a degree in writing?” Of course, as someone who was graduating literally the next day, it’s needless to say, my ego took a hit. So, fast forward, combining her comment with my Wattpad days, I started writing and haven’t looked back since.

I haven’t made a career out of this yet, but inshallah one day. For now, I will dream big, work hard, and persevere. In the end, it’ll be worth it.
